Ray Mercer Returns to Fight Undefeated Ron Sparks

Former boxing champion Ray Mercer, who scored a nine-second knockout in his MMA pro debut last June against Tim Sylvia, will make his follow-up appearance against undefeated Ron Sparks at King of the Cage on April 16 in Detroit, Mich.

The event, the promotion's third live card on HDNet, is headlined by Jake Rosholt taking on Jeremy Horn. Also on the card are Joe Doerksen vs. Chad Herrick, David Shepherd vs. Dom O'Grady and Bobby Green vs. Daron Cruikshank.

Mercer (1-0) actually made is MMA debut against Kimbo Slice two years prior to the Sylvia fight, but the fight wouldn't be sanctioned as a pro fight and instead was officially an "exhibition" bout. Mercer lost the fight to a guillotine choke 72 seconds in. Mercer, who earlier this month turned 48, won the gold medal in boxing in the 1988 Olympics.

Sparks (5-0) is 6-foot-5 and tips the scale at nearly 300 pounds. He knocked out three opponents when he first started fighting MMA in 2006. Sparks, along the likes of Bobby Lashley and Tara LaRosa, fell victim to signing with the AFL in 2008 and didn't fight until last year.
