"I went in and had a gameplan and went to fight my fight," he said. "It was just another fight and I was totally prepared."
It was the second straight loss for Torres, who was coming off a title loss to Brian Bowles and had re-tooled his training camp in preparation. Torres fell to 37-3.
Benavidez won the first. He floored Torres in the first with a straight right, but Torres recovered quickly and Benavidez refused to go to the ground with him. Benavidez took him down and Torres threatened with an arm bar before Benavidez pulled away.
Benavidez kept top position for the rest of the round, landing a few strikes from the top.
Benavidez shot in for another takedown midway through the second. He sliced Torres' face open with an elbow from the top, then cinched in a guillotine. With Torres' faced covered with blood, he turned Benavidez over, trying to escape but Benavidez held on. In top position, Benavidez had Torres trapped, and the former bantamweight champ was forced to tap.
Benavidez improved to 12-1 with the victory.
