UFC 109 Undercard Blog: Gracie vs. Beltran, Stann vs. Davis, More

This is the live blog for the undercard bouts of UFC 109, featuring Phillipe Nover vs. Rob Emerson, Brian Stann vs. Phil Davis, Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer and Rolles Gracie vs. Joey Beltran.

The first bout is scheduled to begin 7:15 pm ET.

Phillipe Nover vs. Rob Emerson

Round 1: Neither fighter got an entrance because the Spike show is rapidly approaching. Even Bruce Buffer sped through the intros. Fight starts, and Nover slips as he attemps a head kick. Emerson capitalizes and lands in Nover's guard. Emerson not doing much there, though. Nover gets up as he has Emerson caught in a guillotine. Emerson tries to roll out of it, but Nover is still hanging tough. Choke looks tight. Emerson does get out. Round ends as both men are pressed against the cage with Nover in Emerson's guard.

Round 2:
Nover shoots for a takedown early, but Emerson reverses it. Emerson landing shots as Nover is trying to keep him away with his feet. Emerson in Nover's guard. Nover not allowing him to posture up. Nover stands back up. They clinch against the cage, but nothing doing. Herb Dean separates the fighters. Emerson takes Nover down, lands in his guard again, but not much doing as the round ends.

Round 3: Nover kicks Emerson below the belt 30 seconds into the round. Emerson needs a minute to gather his thoughts. The start up again. They clinch against the cage. They separate. Emerson easily takes Nover down with a double-leg. Nover is trying to escape. Emerson is holding on, but not inflicting any damage. Nover stands up and has a tight guillotine choke. Emerson escapes. Final minute. Both men trading shots. Nover lands a knee to the body. Emerson lands a single-leg. Nover gets up. Emerson lands a double-leg as round ends.

Rob Emerson def. Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision.

Brian Stann vs. Phil Davis

Round 1: Davis misses high left kick early. After a minute of engaging, Davis clinches. They're quickly up against the cage. Davis' striking looks better than I thought it would be. They clinch again, and Davis lands the double-leg. Davis in side control close to the fence. Davis is very strong. He secures mount. Stann gives up his back. Davis land shots, so Stann turns around again. Nice first round for Davis.

Round 2:
Stann lands a nice kick to the body. Davis throws a right, and then quickly takes Stann down. He's in half guard. Stann is not faring well on the ground. He gives up his back once again. Davis landing some shots on the ground, but Stann is doing a good enough job of protecting himself. Davis now landing some big knees to Stann's side/kidney region. He just doesn't seem to know how to submit him. Stann is just looking to survive. Round ends.

Round 3: Big double-leg takedown by Davis a minute into the round. He's in side control, then full mount. He isn't inflicting much damage on the ground. He moves from half guard, to mount, to side control, but not much going on. Finally, Davis locks in an armbar. Round ends as Stann is about to tap out.

Phil Davis def. Brian Stann via unanimous decision

Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer

Round 1: Both fighters clinch early against the fence. Looks like Tuchscherer wants to take this to the ground. They separate. Tuchscherer thinks takedown, but quickly gets stuffed. Hague's striking looks better than before. They clinch against the cage and Hague lands a knee below the belt. Tuchscherer is OK after a a minute of rest. Tuchscherer tries for another takedown, but that plan clearly isn't working for him. Hague catches Tuchscherer in a guillotine choke. It isn't tight enough. Tuchscherer survives. Round ends.

Round 2: Tuchscherer finally lands the double-leg. He lands a few strikes on the ground, but Hague gets up. Hague appears to be getting tired. Tuchscherer's striking is looking pretty good. He is doing a nice job of throwing combos, but every time he tries to take Hague down, he gets stuffed. Doesn't make much sense. OK, now both guys look very tired. Hands down, huffing and puffing. This isn't pretty. Crowd getting restless. They clinch up against the cage. Hague scoring points with his dirty boxing as round ends.

Round 3: Hague lands a right hand, then a left hook early. Tuchscherer looks rocked. Hague landing lefts and rights as Tuchscherer backs up towards the cage. Tuchscherer tries to take him down, but Hague reverses it, and lands in side control. Tuchscherer gives up his back, but Tuchscherer doesn't take advantage. They briefly stand up, but as Tuchscherer tries to take Hague down, Hague ends up in half guard. Hague is landing shots on Tuchscherer in half guard, but doesn't look like he will be able to finish the fight.

Chris Tuchscherer def. Tim Hague via majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)

Rolles Gracie vs. Joey Beltran

Round 1: Small crowd to see these two heavyweights make their UFC debuts. Gracie Shoots for a double-leg right off the bat. Beltran stuffs it. Gracie tries again and Beltran stuffs it again. Gracie finally takes down "The Mexecutioner" on the third try. Bad news for Beltran. Beltran immediately gives up his back. Gracie tries for the rear-naked choke, but Beltran turns back. Gracie in full mount dropping bombs on Beltran. Somehow, Beltran reverses and lands in Gracies guard. He then gets up and tells Gracie to stand up too. Gracie's striking looks a little stiff. That said, Beltran is getting tagged by his straight right. Beltran lands a right hook. Gracie tries for a sloppy takedown. Surprising. Beltran tells him to stand up. Both men are looking very sluggish. Both fighters trade sloppy punches. Very ugly stuff. Gracie shoots for a takedown with seconds remaining and gets stuffed again. Gracie turtles up as Beltran lands several shots as the round ends.

Round 2: Gracie shoots for a takedown again early and, once again, gets stuffed. Beltran lands more shots as he turtles up. Gracie tries again, but looks very sloppy and tired. Crowd begins to boo loudly. Gracie shoots for another sloppy takedown, Beltran stuffs it and begins landing 20 or so unanswered shots before Herb Dean stops the fight. Gracie lays on the mat for a minute or so face down.
