HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL. -- This is the Strikeforce live blog for Jake Shields vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller, the middleweight bout on the CBS card for the vacant Strikeforce 185-pound championship.

Shields, a Cesar Gracie product, puts his 12-fight win streak on the line against the outgoing host of MTV's Bully Beatdown, "Mayhem" Miller, who was last seen in May challenging for the DREAM middleweight strap.

The live blog begins below.



Round 1: Shields with a leg kick and punch. Miller throws two punches but Shields shoots and finishes the takedown. Shields presses a sitting Miller against the cage. Shields takes Miller's back. Miller looks to turn in front of Shields. Shields lands punches. Miller turns in front of Shields, giving up full mount. Miller escapes to his feet. Shields shoots and Miller sprawls, but Shields is able to finish the takedown. Shields throws right punches to Miller's body as Miller plays to crowd to express Shield's ineffectiveness in hurting him. Mayhem stands and they tie up. Miller gets the double and picks up Shields to put him on his back. Shields works from closed guard. Miller launches a big hand and almost gets caught in a leg lock. They are back on the feet working in clinch. Miller switches to Shields' back and momentarily takes Shields down. Shields stands but Miller puts him down for good. Miller connects on a few rights before the sound of the bell.

Round 2: Miller enters clinch with a left hook. Miller turns to Shields back and brings him down. However, it's Shields who is in control. They are tangled up until Shields sits up for full mount. Shields kicks off the cage to escape. Shields takes Miller's back and looks to set up the rear-naked choke. Miller scoots out to guard but he's pulled into almost a banana split. Shields turns and gains side control. Shields settles for halfguard. Shields climbs and takes Miller's back. Miller escapes. He sits on Shield's legs. Shields teases a heel hook.

Round 3: Miller clinches and takes Shields down. Shields stands and puts Miller down into side control. Shields steps his left leg over for full mount. Miller sneaks in a leg, but Shields works his way back full mount. Miller gives up his back and Shields drops punches to Miller's red hair. Miller rolls out into Shield's guard. Shields stands and grabs a single-leg. Miller turns it around and squeezes Shields against the cage. Referee Big John McCarthy pauses the fight to fix Miller's tape on his gloves. They are restarted in the same position and Shields scores the quick takedown into Miller's halfguard. Miller stands up and Shields looks for the takedown. He brings the fight down with a single-leg but Miller is able to scoot out to take Shields' back. Miller applies the rear-naked choke. Shields is saved by the bell!

Round 4: Shields scores the takedown 20 seconds in. Shields works for over two minutes to pass, and the referee stands them up. Miller closes the distance and lands a knee to the body and gets excited, but he's taken down. Shields secures full mount at 1:32. Shields takes Miller's back with both hooks in. Miller turtles and rolls to escape but Shields ends up with side mount with under 30 seconds left.

Round 5: The briefly trade punches before going for takedowns. Shields grabs a headlock off clinch. Shields finishes the takedown and takes Miller's back. Shields drops punches in Miller's halfguard. Shields climbs to full mount. Miller gives up his back. Shields works for the choke. MIller turns into Shields with 90 seconds left. Shields turns back in and lays in Miller's halfguard. Shields controls Miller. Miller breaks free with five seconds left and swings a punch and kick time expires.
