In what could be his last fight in Japan for the near future, former PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi has been booked to take on King of the Cage lightweight titleholder Tony Hervey at Vale Tudo Japan 2009 on Oct. 30 at the JCB Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
Hervey (11-5) fights out of the Mash Gym in Redford, Mich. and is coming off a King of the Cage title win against Victor "Joe Boxer" Valenzuela in August and a 12-second knockout over UFC veteran Alberto Crane in June. Hervey is an aggressive fighter and all his wins have ended by either TKO or submission.
Gomi (30-5) ended a two-fight slide in May when he showed signs of his old self by knocking out Takashi Nakakura in his return to Shooto. Gomi prior had suffered disappointing losses to Sergey Golyaev by split decision and Satoru Kitaoka by ankle lock. After this fight, Gomi plans on crossing over to the US to continue his fight career.
The 2009 installment of Vale Tudo Japan is the return of the series after a 10-year absence. The series were annual events connected to Shooto from 1994 to 1999 and featured early pro fights from RIckson Gracie, Randy Couture and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai.
