In a major upset that shakes up the welterweight division, Paul Daley beat Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 by first-round TKO, pummeling Kampmann with a punches in bunches.
It was a short fight that featured hard punches going both ways, but Daley, a short, compact power puncher, was landing more of them. Kapmann never actually hit the ground, but referee Yves Lavigne decided to step between them and stop the fight anyway, thinking Kampmann was out on his feet. The stoppage was questionable, and Kampmann clearly wasn't pleased, but Daley had Kampmann hurt.
"I'm well pleased," Daley said afterward. "First time in the UFC, stepping up to such a great fighter in Martin Kampmann. ... The referee obviously saw a few times that his eyes went a few times -- he was only trying to protect his health. I would have hurt him."
Daley, who was making his UFC debut, improved his professional MMA record to 22-8-2. Kampmann falls to 15-3, including 6-2 in the UFC.
