UFC 102 Undercard Live Blog: Herman-Simpson, Gonzaga-Tuchscherer, More

This is the UFC 102 undercard live blog for all six matches on the undercard, which features Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer, Ed Herman vs. Aaron Simpson, Mike Russow vs. Justin McCully, Todd Duffee vs. Tim Hague, Mark Munoz vs. Nick Catone and Marcus Aurelio vs. Evan Dunham.

FanHouse is live in Portland and will provide round-by-round details of every match. The first bout is scheduled to begin 7:45PM ET.

The live blog begins below.



Marcus Aurelio vs. Evan Dunham

Round 1: Crowd favorite Dunham moves forward with a combo and Aurelio dodges all. They catch each other with a punch at the same time. Dunham moves forward again, this time glancing a shot off Aurelio's nose. Aurelio begins to throw but backs off after a big one-two by Dunham. Aurelio appears cautious of Dunham's hands, and he has good reason: Dunham drops Aurelio with a left. Aurelio on his knees goes for a takedown and pulls guard. Dunham delivers ground and pound punches but eventually gets up to let Aurelio stand with him. Aurelio shoots and Dunham stuffs the takedown. Aurelio shoots again and tries to pull guard, but Dunham knows better than to grapple with Aurelio. Aurelio catches Dunham with a right punch to the side of the head. Dunham lands another combo. Aurelio is swinging wildly in hopes of landing something. 10-9 Dunham.

Round 2: Aurelio wants the takedown and comes up empty. Dunham throws a kick that Aurelio uses as an opportunity for another takedown attempt, but Dunham shrugs him off. Aurelio connects on a right. Aurelio finally brings the fight to the ground in side control. Aurelio drops rights as Dunham moves to halfguard. Dunham scrambles to his feet. Aurelio connects with a right. He lands a right hook. The referee separates them and checks on Dunham. They trade punches and Aurelio reaches down for the double leg with Dunham against the fence. Aurelio swings a big right upon breaking off the clinch. Dunham throws a jumping knee that touches Aurelio but doesn't phase him. Dunham swings and Aurelio shoots. Aurelio switches over to a single-leg but Dunham evades. Dunham lands a leg kick. They trade punches again with Dunham getting the better of Aurelio. Dunham lands more kicks to score points in this close round. 10-9 Dunham.

Round 3: Aurelio immediately goes for the takedown and gets it. Aurelio tries to pass Dunham's guard while sneaking in punches. Aurelio climbs to the side but Dunham turns to his knees to stop Aurelio's pass, and grabs a single leg. Aurelio holds a choke and Dunham flips over. Aurelio still has the choke. Dunham pulls out at 2:59 to the crowd's giant approval. Aurelio shoots and Dunham sprawls. Aurelio climbs to halfguard. Dunham uses a a butterfly guard to sweep Aurelio off and they're back to their feet. Aurelio is tired. Dunham swings wildly. Aurelio shoots and Dunham stops it. Aurelio drops for the double leg and Dunham shoves Aurelio off. They trade to end the round. 10-9 Aurelio.

Dunham wins via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)

Mark Munoz vs. Nick Catone

Round 1: Munoz uses a left punch to set up the clinch. Munoz lands a knee. Catone unloads with punches and Munoz covers. Munoz shoots for the single leg and gets it momentarily as Catone spins away and they're back on the feet. Munoz walks forward with punches to set up a takedown. They end in clinch. Munoz connects with a right and so does Catone. Neither are phased. Munoz lands a left kick directly below the belt and Catone is given time to recover. Catone shoots and takes Munoz down in side control. Catone drops knees to Munoz's ribs. Munoz turns and Catone floats on Munoz's back. Munoz grabs Catone's back in standing. Catone lands a nice back elbow but gets slammed. Back up, Munoz lands a leg kick and Catone returns with a front kick. Munoz shoots and Catone tries to reverse, and they end in clinch. Munoz connects on knees before Catone scores one more takedown before the bell sounds. 10-9 Catone

Round 2: Munoz throws a right kick the same time as Catone pushes forward with a takedown. Catone finishes it and tries to control Munoz's back. Munoz escapes. Munoz tries to drag Catone to the floor from clinch. Catone is staying balanced to avoid being put on his back. Munoz with a combo and his final punch slaps Catone in the face. Munoz tries to take Catone down but Catone pops back up. Catone lands a right. Munoz looking for the knockout. Catone goes for the single leg but is caught in a guillotine. At first Catone appeared to be ready to tap but he survives the remainder of the second round. 10-9 Munoz

Round 3: Munoz shoots 20 seconds in and Catone creatively rolls over his shoulder to escape. Catone lands shots on Munoz. Munoz shoots and Catone sprawls and spins around to almost take Munoz's back. They turn up the pace. Munoz throws and shoots. Catone backs off right away. They trade glancing shots. Munoz catches Catone with another guillotine but Catone passes to Munoz's halfguard to escape. Catone turns for the ankle lock and Munoz escapes. As soon as Munoz gets out, he grabs Catone and slams him. Munoz's right hand is blocked but his next overhand right connects. Catone scores the takedown and climbs Munoz's back. Catone falls over and Munoz ends up in Catone's halfguard. Catone turns and Munoz controls Catone's back while delivering big right hands. Catone wants to roll but Munoz is doing a great job controlling him. The final minute should help Munoz win the fight. 10-9 Munoz

Munoz wins via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)

Todd Duffee vs. Tim Hague

Round 1: Hague rushes in with an overhand left but he runs right into a stiff jab by Duffee and Hague is dropped. Duffee connects with rights and a huge left knocks out Hague. Fight is over in seven seconds.

Duffee wins via KO

That's the fastest knockout in UFC history, according to Joe Rogan. Duffee corrects him and says he thinks it's six seconds. Nonetheless, Duffee is going to be a star, and you can count on this fight airing on pay-per-view.

Mike Russow vs. Justin McCully

Round 1: McCully jabs. Russow wants the takedown. They clinch and Russow kills one leg and grabs the other to put McCully on his back. Russow enters McCully's guard. Russow connects with right hands. Russow stands up to try to pass. McCully closes his guard. Russow passes to halfguard and scores points with left hands. McCully turns into Russow to escape and he gets to his feet. Russow grabs the single leg and goes to pull McCully in but McCully almost reverses. Still, Russow is in McCully's guard. Russow gives McCully an opening and McCully takes it, taking control of Russow's back. He's not able to apply a choke though as Russow escapes. McCully tries an ankle lock, but Russow gets away into McCully's closed guard. 10-9 Russow

There's something wrong with McCully. He actually gets pushed by the commission, perhaps to test his reaction. Not sure why there's a delay, but eventually he's allowed to continue.

Round 2: McCully lands a knee as he separates from clinch. Russow goes for the takedown, eats a knee, but finishes. Russow sits in McCully's half guard. Russow sticks to his wrestling and controls McCully. Russow has side mount Russow drops punches. Referee Herb Dean pauses the fight to warn Russow against punching to the back of the head. The fight is restarted in the middle of the Octagon. Russow catches a lazy flying knee and puts McCully on his back. Russow tries to straighten out McCully's arm for the submission but the bell sounds. 10-9 Russow

Round 3: McCully works punches but Russow easily blocks. Russow takes McCully down 40 seconds in. McCully lands an upkick. Russow stays heavy on McCully, but not much action. Dean stands them up. McCully lets his hands go but again they're slow and Russow simply puts McCully on his bottom. Russow can't put together meaningful ground and pound and Dean stands them up again. In desperate need of a finish, McCully swings wildy with the clock winding down but he's brought back to the floor. The crowd roars in disapproval of lack of action in the fight. 10-9 Russow

Russow wins via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-26, 30-27)

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Chris Tuchscherer

Round 1: Gonzaga land a hard left kick -- and it's low. Tuchscherer holds his groin and falls flat on his back on the mat. He's in a lot of pain and the fight is in danger of being stopped. Tuchscherer is helped onto a stool. After a while he gets up and walks around while wincing. A long delay but he's ultimately allowed to continue. Gonzaga lands a huge left kick (reminiscent of his knockout against Cro Cop) that drops Tuchscherer. Gonzaga takes knee on belly and works left hands. Gonzaga climbs into full mount. Tuchscherer gives up his back and Gonzaga controls. Gonzaga punches away and Tuchscherer's blonde hair is turning red. Tuchscherer is done but for some reason the referee is not stopping the fight. Tuchscherer gets up dazed and the referee again allows the fight to continue. Gonzaga has no choice but to rush in with another punch. Gonzaga unloads with left and rights and finally the referee stops the fight. Fight should have been stopped much earlier.

Gonzaga wins via TKO (punches) - R1 (2:27)

Ed Herman vs. Aaron Simpson

Round 1: Herman jabs. Herman lands a kick to the head but it doesn't bother Simpson. Simpson shoots and he pushes Herman to his back. Herman pops up, but Simpson moves forward and picks Herman up for a huge slam. Herman fights off his back and Simpson is unable to deliver significant damage. Herman kicks Simpson off and gets to his feet. Herman slips on a knee strike but gets back to his feet. Simpson lands a huge overhand right. Herman is down and Simpson goes for the finish. Herman survives. Herman follows Simpson to his feet. Simpson scores the takedown and swarms with punches. Herman escapes to full guard. Big round for Simpson. 10-8 Simpson

Herman may have hurt his left knee.

Round 2: Simpson catches a right kick and Herman's left knee gives out. The referee stops the fight.

Simpson wins via TKO (injury and punches) - R2 (0:17)
