Demian Maia is no longer undefeated, and Nate Marquardt might be ready for another shot at the UFC middleweight title. After Marquardt destroyed Maia with a dramatic one-punch knockout Saturday night at UFC 102 in Portland, he may be next in line for Anderson Silva.
It was a shocking result, with Marquardt stepping forward and landing a brutal right hand to Maia's head that sent Maia flying. Marquardt was about to pounce, but he realized he had knocked Maia out and held off, even though the referee was slow to step in. The final result was a Marquardt knockout just 21 seconds into the first round.
"I want that belt," Marquardt said. "I don't know who's getting the shot next, but if you want someone who can go in there and kick Anderson Silva's butt, then you're going to give the shot to me."
With that, Silva, sitting in the audience, stood up and gestured that he was willing to fight Marquardt. That drew a huge cheer from the crowd. Silva has already beaten Marquardt once, but a rematch would undoubtedly be a great fight.
Marquardt improved his professional MMA record to 29-8-2. Maia falls to 10-1.
