"It's good to be home!" said Couture, who began his MMA career in Gresham before opening Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas in 2006.
Couture weighed in at 220 pounds, while fellow former champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira stepped off the scales at 231 to make official their long-awaited showdown.
"He's a tremendous opponent, this a long time coming," Couture told the lively crowd. "It's a pleasure to be in a main event here in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up and lived for so long."
While the two are guaranteed future legends of the sport, both men are entering this fight with a far different story line than one they would have told had they fought in 2001, a time when Couture was the UFC heavyweight champion and Nogueira ruled the PRIDE heavyweight division.
No longer are they fighting for the status of the best heavyweight in the world, but to prove their relevance as a formidable title challengers at this stage of their careers.
At 46, Couture will for the remainder of his career, be questioned about his age -- which the crowd addressed with boos when UFC commentator Joe Rogan brought up the topic in his first question to Couture during the weigh-ins. Meanwhile, Nogueira is out to demonstrate that he is not a shell of his former self as displayed, arguably, in his TKO loss last December to Frank Mir.
"Tomorrow night is one of the most important fights in my life," Nogueira said. "I just came from a loss, so I trained very much [for this fight]. You're going to see a different Nogueira than the last fight, for sure."
The rest of the weigh-ins went on without any hiccups with all other competitors on the card successfully making weight to finalize Saturday's 11-fight card.
