Overeem (29-11) has previously lost to Werdum via kimura submission at PRIDE "Total Elimination Absolute" in May 2006.
"I'm very happy that I'm being given the opportunity to fight him again and I'm looking forward to beating him," Overeem said. "This is the one rematch I've wanted. I'm going to punish this guy."
Werdum will be coming off a four-fight stint with the UFC where he picked up wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga and dropped fights against Junior dos Santos and Andrei Arlovski. For Werdum, the fight is less about a rematch and more about being able to wear a title bout around his waist.
"Coming in as the challenger in a title match is a huge motivating factor for me," Werdum said."Whether the fight is against Alistair or another fighter doesn't necessarily matter to me. What matters is that I am fighting the champion."
