Fedor confirms he has agreed to fight Barnett

Although no announcement has been made, it seems all but official that Fedor Emelianenko (30-1) will take on Josh Barnett (24-5) on August 1 at Affliction 3 in Anaheim, California.

Speaking to M-1 Global, Emelianenko has confirmed reports that the two have agreed to meet inside the ring.

"I am always 100% involved in the negotiations especially with regards to the Barnett fight," Fedor said. "We discussed this fight with the whole team (trainers, coaches, management), so as a team we agreed to a fight with Barnett."

This is the fight that makes the most sense right now for Fedor. Barnett is the only top ten heavyweight outside of the UFC that Fedor has not defeated. If Fedor beats Barnett, it would be the final PRIDE champ's sixth win over a former UFC heavyweight champion.

Meanwhile, Barnett, who at 24 became the youngest UFC heavyweight titleholder, has faced criticism in recent years for inactivity as well as accepting fights that don't elevate his ranking. Taking a fight against Fedor, would erase those notions.

Further, the PRIDE veterans have been built up to meet each other through the two Affliction events. Fedor finished two former UFC champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski in a combined time of three minutes and 50 seconds, while Barnett knocked out Pedro Rizzo and forced Gilbert Yvel to submit due to strikes at the Affliction events.
