UFC 98 'Evans vs. Machida' Live Play-By-Play Results

Live results of the UFC 98 "Evans vs Machida" card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Rashad Evans defends his light-heavyweight title against Lyoto Machida in a first-ever UFC main event comprised of undefeated fighters.

Also, after a near 18-month delay, the grudge match between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally come to fruition, as the two former welterweight champions and "The Ultimate Fighter 4" coaches collide in the evening's co-headliner.

Matt Williams, who pens "The Real Deal" columns for, will be joining us to score the rounds.

Fight #1 - Frank Edgar (155) vs. Sean Sherk (156)

A pumped up Edgar makes his way quickly towards the Octagon. The "Jaws" theme is played and we all know what that means: It's the "Muscle Shark's turn to enter.

R1: Edgar with a headkick that's blocked. Sherk pumps out jabs. Edgar misses a low kick. Sherk misses an uppercut. Both guys miss punches. They clinch and separate. Edgar looks for a takedown, steps back and lands a kick. They exchange punches but they're both able to avoid damage. Edgar lands with a punch combo. Sherk tags Edgar with a right. Edgar with another punch combo that scores. Edgar connects on a leg kick and circles out. Edgar shoots and Sherk defends. Sherk lands a left hook. Sherk lands a right kick but the attack allows Edgar to take Sherk down. Sherk quickly gets to his feet but Edgar controls with a headlock. Sherk escapes with one minute left. They each land nice shots to close the round. scores the round 10-9 for Edgar. Matt says 10-9 for Edgar as well.

R2: Sherk presses the action as Edgar continues to circle. They trade and Sherk lands a left hook. Edgar shoots and backs off. Edgar lands a kick to the body. Nice shots from both guys. Edgar looks for the takedown. He doesn't get it but lands a knee to the body that slips Sherk down. Back up, they continue to mostly box. Edgar lands a nice punch combo. Edgar with another nice combo. Sherk continues to throw oiut the left hook. An accidental kick below the belt pauses the bout. Edgar shoots and Sherk stops it. scores the round 10-9 for Edgar. Matt also gives the round 10-9 for Edgar.

R3: They box. Sherk scores an enormous takedown at 4:16. That was his first takedown attempt of the fight. Edgar recovers to his feet. Sherk has a small cut on his left eyebrow. Back to boxing and they both defend well. Sherk shoots again and Edgar escapes from it. Edgar lands a kick to the body. Edgar with another nice punch combo. Edgar taps a leg kick. Sherk connects on a left hook. Edgar goes for the same combo. Sherk shoots with ten seconds left and Edgar stops it and attempts a guillotine to end the round! That should do it for Edgar. While Sherk was never in danger, Edgar was the better boxer and did enough with his hands for the win. and Matt both score the third round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Edgar.

Official Result: Edgar wins via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Fight #2 - Dan Miller (185) vs. Chael Sonnen (186)

Miller walks out all smiles and slapping hands with fans near the aisle.

R1: Sonnen shoots but gets caught in an arm-in guillotine. Sonnen pops his head out and begins his assault on Miller against the cage. Sonnen lands elbows, stands up and drops punches. Miller attempts to kick Sonnen off, but Sonnen is doing a good job dropping punches. Miller grabs for a kneebar and gives up his back. Sonnen has side control, landing left elbows. Miller escapes to half guard and eventually closed guard. Miller's face is marked up. and Matt scores the round 10-9 for Sonnen.

R2: Sonnen tries to catch a kick and reach for the takedown, but Miller gets away. They clinch and Sonnen drops for the takedown. Sonnen lifts Miller up and puts him down. Miller again grabs the guillotine but doesn't get it. Sonnen goes back to work at ground and pounding. Miller attempts the armbar with two minutes left, and gives it up. Sonnen continues staying on top of Miller with punches.

Another 10-9 for Sonnen.

R3: Miller misses a high kick. Miller walks through with a punch combo. Sonnen gets the takedown, and it looks like we'll see a repeat of the first two rounds. Sonnen scores with punches and occasional elbows. And yeah, another round of Sonnen punishing Miller inside Miller's guard.

Sonnen will win this one easily 30-27.

Official Result: Sonnen wins via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Fight #3 - Drew McFedries (185) vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam (186)

Foupa-Pokam dances his way to the Octagon. Fedries enters to Dr. Dre-Snoop Dogg.

R1: FP circles left. Fedries throws a heavy one-two. He doesn't stop there and drops FP with a big right hand. McFedries is relentlessly trying to finish. FP gets back up and is dropped to his knee. McFedries drops FP once more, forcing the referee stoppage. Fedries walks away celebrating as FP is still holding onto a leg. Referee Yves Lavigne is getting boo'd all night for a controversial stoppage earlier in the prelims but this was without a doubt the right call.

Official Result: McFedries wins via TKO (punch) - R1 (0:37)

Fight #4 - Matt Serra (171) vs. Matt Hughes (170)

Serra, playing up his underdog status, enters to the "Rocky" theme song. Hughes walks out to his long-running entrance song, "A Country Boy Can Survive," by Hank Williams Jr.

R1: Hughes comes out in southpaw stance. Serra knocks down Hughes! Replays show that it was actually an accidental headbutt to the chin. Hughes gets to his feet but is still dazed. Serra looks to finish. Hughes grabs a leg and recovers in clinch. Hughes reaches for the takedown but Serra shakes him off. Hughes clinches up and gets a big takedown directly into side control. Hughes climbs on Serra's back. Hughes lands right punches to set up the choke. Serra turns over and escapes to his feet. Serra misses a high kick. and Matt score the round 10-9 for Serra. A case can be made that Hughes won the round though if it wasn't for the headbutt.

R2: Hughes lands a kick to the body. Hughes shoots and gets the takedown. Hughes passes to halfguard. Hughes chops at Serra with rights. Serra is shrimping to escape. Serra momentarily gets full guard but is back to halfguard. The referee stands them up and they restart with nine seconds left. Serra is asking Hughes to move forward.

Hughes wins the second round 10-9.

R3: Hughes sticks out a knee that doesn't connect. Serra cautiously punches, knowing a takedown attempt by Hughes is inevitable. Hughes lands a right to set up the takedown. Serra desperately tries to stop it but is taken down. Serra traps a shoulder for a possible omoplata. He lets go at 3:10. Serra attempts a triangle choke, but Hughes postures up and escapes. Hughes in Serra's halfguard. Serra hugs Hughes for a standup and gets it. Back on their feet with 90 seconds left in the fight. Serra needs a finish. They clinch, and Serra takes Hughes down! 30 seconds left. Serra drops punches. Hughes hangs onto a leg while Serra holds a kimura. Interestingly, Hughes raises Serra's hand. scores the round 10-9 and the fight 29-28 for Hughes. Matt scores the round 10-9 and the fight 29-28 for Serra.

Official Result: Hughes wins via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Hughes says he will definitely not retire. He also notes that he's a free agent but "will not fight anywhere else (but the UFC)."

Lyoto Machida (204) vs. Rashad Evans (205)

Machida walks out wearing his gi to Linkin Park's "Bleed it out." He's been sponsored by them for awhile, but it's still funny to see a Lugz patch on a gi. Evans bounces his way to hip hop song.

R1: They feel each other out, with Machida doing the approaching. Machida throws a left high kick but Evans backs away. Evans moves forward swinging and missing. Machida lands a kick to the body. Evans lands an inside leg kick. Machida moves in with a left kick. They clinch for a second and let go. Machida lands a kick to the body and a left punch knocks down Evans! Machida aggressively pounds away for the finish, but Evans recovers to his feet. Machida's low lead kick-roundhouse kick combo is blocked. Machida throws a kick to the body.

10-9 round for Machida.

R2: Machida lands a leg kick. Machida sets up clinch with a kick to the body. They disengage. Machida lands a punch combo and Evans responds by landing consecutive rights. Evans lands a kick to the body. Machida stuns Evans again. Machida landing right hands. Evans is in survival mode. Machida continues to blast away. A left hook knocks Evans out cold! Evans is laid out with his head resting against the cage. Incredible finish with a devastating knockout.

Machida becomes the new UFC light-heavyweight champion. Machida is in tears as he gets ready for the official announcement.
