Dana White: Chuck Liddell has fought his last fight

UFC president Dana White said Saturday that Chuck Liddell will no longer be fighting after the former UFC champ suffered a TKO defeat to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 97 in Montreal.

"I care about these guys," White said. "I don't want to see anybody sticking around too long, I don't want to see anyone get hurt. And in the almost twenty-year history of the UFC there's never been a death or serious injury...and you're never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again.

"It's done. Tonight was the end of an era. One of the greatest guys in the sport fought his last fight tonight."

However, while Liddell did not sound enthused with this phase of his fight career, he did not want to make a decision until he speaks to his friends and family back home.

Coming into Saturday, White promoted the fight as possibly Liddell's final fight. Unless Liddell won in spectacular fashion, White said he no longer wanted to see his good friend continue fighting.

Liddell's loss to Rua was Liddell's fourth loss in his last five fights, three of which ended with Liddell laid out unconscious on the mat.
