We've now reached the Final Four of March MMAdness, my crazy notion of what would happen if we could put together a 64-man openweight MMA tournament.
Here are the results of the Eilte Eight fights:
Anderson Silva beat Josh Barnett by third-round TKO (strikes)
Brock Lesnar beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by unanimous decision
Fedor Emelianenko beat Randy Couture by first-round submission (arm bar)
Frank Mir beat Lyoto Machida by third-round submission (triangle choke)
The most anticipated bout of the Elite Eight, Randy Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko, turned out to be the only one that wasn't competitive, as Fedor used a quick combination to knock Couture to the canvas and then quickly submitted him once on the ground.
Silva got taken down and badly hurt by Barnett in the first round before regaining his composure in the second and using his superior stand-up to win the fight in the third. Lesnar overpowered Nogueira on the ground and fought cautiously enough that Nogueira wasn't able to submit him, while Mir struggled with Machida's style buteventually got him to the ground and submitted him.
Next weekend we'll get Anderson Silva vs. Brock Lesnar and Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir, and the winners will face off in the tournament final.
