Above, the promo video for WEC 40, the April 5 event in Chicago that is headlined by a main event fight featuring bantamweight champion Miguel Torres against Takeya Mizugaki. As you can see, World Extreme Cagefighting is playing up the Chicago roots of Torres and Jeff Curran, who will fight on the undercard.
I live in Chicago and I'm excited about the WEC coming to town, but I also have to say I'm disappointed that the vast majority of sports fans in Chicago don't realize that in Torres, we have one of MMA's truly elite athletes living in our town. (Actually East Chicago, Indiana, but close enough.)
Don't get me wrong, Torres has a following here: His name alone will sell a few thousand tickets. But Torres, who in my opinion is the fourth best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, should be able to sell more than a few thousand. I hope to see this event sell out and establish Chicago as a great MMA town, but right now, good seats are still available.
