The main event of UFC 101 could feature a heavyweight battle between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the heavyweight legends who had their title belts taken from them by Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir late last year.MMA Weekly is reporting that Couture has agreed to face Nogueira at UFC 101, which is expected to take place in August in Portland. Nogueira hasn't yet said whether he'll take the fight, but it's a fight that fans would love, and it's a fight that makes a lot of sense for both of them.
Couture likely won't be available any sooner than August because he's spending a few weeks this spring filming the upcoming movie The Expendables. August would likely be the right time for Nogueira to return to the Octagon as well; that would represent a 7-8 month layoff for Nogueira, who was badly beaten by Mir at UFC 92 in December.
In addition to matching arguably the second- and third-best heavyweights in MMA history (behind Fedor Emelianenko, of course), the Couture-Nogueira match-up would put the winner in a good position to make one last run at the UFC heavyweight title. This isn't as good a fight as it would have been a couple years ago, but it's still a fight to look forward to.
