Wanderlei Silva: Demian Maia Can Beat Anderson Silva for UFC Title

When I talked to Chael Sonnen last week, he told me that he thinks both he and his UFC 95 opponent, Demian Maia, are better than UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

That's a bold statement, considering that Silva has dominated every opponent he's faced in the UFC. But now Wanderlei Silva says Sonnen is right -- sort of.

Wanderlei (who isn't related to Anderson) didn't express an opinion about Sonnen. But he did say he thinks Maia could be the first man to beat Anderson in the Octagon.

"Demian is the best grappler in the UFC. Five times he has fought in the UFC, four times has taken home Submission of the Night," Wanderlei told setanta.com. "I think he can beat Anderson. I think for somebody to beat Anderson Silva, he needs to come from a Jiu-Jitsu background. I train with guys of high level Jiu-Jitsu and it's so hard – when you go to ground it's so hard man."

Wanderlei added that he thinks Maia, whose Brazilian jiu jitsu skills are arguably the best in the world, has what it takes to win a fight on his feet if he has to.

"Demian's trained a lot of boxing, he has good kicks, every fight his level of stand-up goes higher," Wanderlei said. "He will be a big surprise to UFC fans, he will knock out an opponent soon – his hands are so heavy...it will happen soon."
