Derek Downey released from the UFC

Derek Downey says he was one of 50 fighters recently released by the UFC.

"They released 50 of us," Downey told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We're on the short list, is how [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva puts it... They had to get rid of 50 and I was the newest little guy on the list."

Downey (10-4) lost his UFC debut on Feb. 7 at UFC Fight Night 17 via keylock submission to fellow newcomer Nick Catone. Downey entered the fight as a replacement for "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Amir Sadollah.

Downey had signed a four-fight contract with the UFC, but typical UFC contracts allow the promotion to cut fighters after a loss.
