Frank Shamrock vs. Nick Diaz on Strikeforce April 11 Showtime Card

Strikeforce has already said that Frank Shamrock will fight in the main event of its first show of 2009, which will take place on April 11 in San Jose and appear on Showtime. Now the organization has reportedly signed Nick Diaz as Shamrock's opponent.

Sam Caplan of Five Ounces of Pain reports that the Shamrock vs. Diaz fight has been agreed to and could be announced today. The fight makes sense for Strikeforce because both Shamrock and Diaz are fairly big names in the MMA world, and they both live in California and should draw well in San Jose. They also have a history of trash talking between them, which never hurts with building up hype for a fight.

However, from a competitive standpoint, this fight is something of a head scratcher for the simple reason that the size difference between Diaz and Shamrock is significant. Diaz last fought in July, and for that fight he weighed in at 159.5 pounds. Shamrock last fought in March, when he weighed in at 185 pounds. It's not clear what the weight limit will be for the Diaz-Shamrock fight, but it's fair to say Shamrock will have a big size advantage.

Overall, Diaz vs. Shamrock isn't a bad main event, but it's also far from being one of the marquee MMA fights of the year. I hope Strikeforce is planning a good undercard.

UPDATE: Strikeforce has confirmed that the fight will take place, at a catch weight of 179 pounds.
