Strikeforce Buys EliteXC, No Word on Kimbo Slice or Gina Carano

The Strikeforce mixed martial arts organization announced today that it has purchased assets from the defunct MMA promotion EliteXC, including the organization's video library and certain fighter contracts. But there's no word yet on whether Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano or any other high-profile fighters are part of the deal.

Strikeforce founder Scott Coker released a statement saying, "This is a tremendous development that will bolster the Strikeforce roster and allow us to produce even more competitive matchups between top fighters. Some of these athletes have been on the sidelines for a while now and are eagerly waiting to return to competition. We look forward to providing them with the opportunity to do so in the next few months."

I called Strikeforce's Mike Afromowitz today, and he said he couldn't release the names of the fighters whose contracts Strikeforce has acquired. My own guess is that Kimbo and Carano aren't part of the deal and will soon become free agents. But in any event, it's good that we're close to putting the mess that EliteXC has become in the past few months behind us.
