GSP named Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year

The votes have been tallied and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was named today as the Canadian Athlete of the Year by the Canadian sports network Sportsnet.

"It's an honour for me to have this award and being the first MMA guy to receive something like this," St-Pierre said on the channel's website Sportsnet.ca. "I want to congratulate the other nominees because they have done an incredible job in their respective sports, making this an even more special honour.

The other nominees were Calgary Flames' Captain Jarome Iginla, Minnasota Twins' All-Star Justin Morneau, Tennis Player Daniel Nestor and paralympian Chantal Petitclerc.

St-Pierre (19-2) reclaimed the UFC welterweight title in April when he defeated Matt Serra via TKO at UFC 83 in Montreal and followed up with a convincing unanimous decision victory over Jon Fitch at UFC 82 in August.
