Cheick Kongo: I'm Disappointed Brock Lesnar Got the UFC Heavyweight Title So Fast

Cheick Kongo, who will fight Mostapha Al-Turk at UFC 92, says he was disappointed with how quickly Brock Lesnar got a heavyweight title shot:

"I have nothing to say about his performance," Kongo said of Lesnar. "He trains hard. (But) I'm disappointed because Lesnar got the title so fast. I try to get this but most of the time there's someone keeping me back. ... I don't think I'm a star, you know, or a super fighter, I just try to get better, I just try to get this title you know. That is why I am here."

If Kongo thinks his 5-2 record in the Octagon is more impressive than Lesnar's 2-1 record, I see where he's coming from. But really, at the time that Randy Couture came out of retirement, Lesnar was more deserving of a shot at Couture's belt than Kongo was.

Heath Herring serves as a good yardstick for comparing Lesnar and Kongo, because both of them fought Herring this year. The results? Herring beat Kongo by split decision. Lesnar destroyed Herring in about as one-sided a unanimous decision as you'll see, with all three judges scoring it 30-26. Lesnar got the shot at Couture because he's a big name, but he also got it because of what he did to Herring. I don't have a problem with that.
