Affliction Entertainment did not disclose the extent of Ortiz's involvement other than referring to Ortiz as a "special guest" for the conference.
Ortiz (15-6-1) has been out of action since leaving the UFC on a unanimous decision loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 "Ill Will" on May 24.
If nothing comes out of Ortiz's appearance at the Affliction press conference on Wednesday, it wouldn't be the first time he's teased fans on where he'll fight next.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated early August, Ortiz spoke of signing a ground-breaking contract with Affliction that later turned out to be false. Affliction VP Tom Atencio went as far as to say that he had no idea where the story came from.
Two months later Ortiz appeared on CBS at EliteXC "Heat," saying he "was about a week away from signing a deal" with the promotion. EliteXC held another show six days later -- which turned out to be the group's last.
With EliteXC out of the picture, Ortiz last month in an appearance on HDNet's "Inside MMA" guaranteed that he would return to fighting either with the UFC or Affliction by July. First he has to recover from a surgery he underwent in October to repair a serious nagging back injury.
Check back Wednesday to MMAFighting.com to learn the extent of Ortiz's involvement with Affliction.
The Affliction "Day of Reckoning" event takes place Jan. 24 at the Honda Center in Anaheim and will be televised live on pay-per-view.
