Houston Alexander faces must-win fight tonight

Winless in his last two fights, light-heavyweight Houston Alexander (8-3) is facing a must-win situation when he takes on Eric "Red" Schafer (9-3-2) tonight at UFC Fight Night in Omaha, Neb.

"He desperately needs a win," UFC president Dana White said in an article on Yahoo! Sports. "Another loss and he's going to have to go out and start working his way back up to the UFC."

Alexander exploded into the UFC in 2007 with highlight-reel knockouts over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara at UFC 71 and 75, respectively. The two fights lasted a combined total of 1 minute and 49 seconds.

However, the heavy puncher's ground game became a big question mark in his loss to Thiago Silva at UFC 78: Validation on Nov. 11, 2007. Even worse, Alexander in his next fight was knocked out by James Irvin with a Superman punch in eight seconds.

Alexander insists he's become a more well-rounded fighter since, and he'll get to prove that tonight in front of his hometown fans against Schafer, a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
