But who will Liddell fight? It could be Anderson Silva, the middleweight champion who is widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer writes that Silva has been approached about moving up to light heavyweight, and he's not opposed to it.
Silva moving up in class would make sense mostly because UFC doesn't have any middleweights good enough to beat him, meaning the class is in danger of getting boring. On the other hand, White has said he prefers to have fighters dominate their own classes, rather than move up in weight, and this would be a step away from that approach.
Overall, I think there's a pretty good chance of this happening, and of it being one of UFC's biggest fights ever.
Note: I do not think this is White's promised "announcement next week that is going to blow people's minds." White has said he's renting out a hall to tell all of UFC's employees about next week's announcement; there's no reason he'd need to do that to announce a Silva-Liddell fight.
