Sean Sherk officially cleared to fight

Sean Sherk can finally put his positive steroid test behind him.

The California State Athletic Commission lifted Sherk's suspension today at 3:42pm when the UFC lightweight "fully complied with all terms of his disciplinary action."

Sherk tested positive for Nandrolone after successfully defending his belt against Hermes Franca at UFC 73: Stacked in Sacramento. Sherk was suspended for one year beginning July 7, 2007 and fined $2,500. The suspension was later reduced to six months after a lengthy and confusing appeals process.

But six months from July 7 means Sherk's suspension should have expired months ago. That's because Sherk waited until today to pay the fine. If Sherk had paid his fine on time, his suspension would have ended on January 3, the Commission confirmed to MMAFighting.com.

Sherk, whom the UFC stripped of the lightweight title in favor of a BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson vacant title bout, is slated to challenge Penn for the belt on May 24 at UFC 84 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
