Yamma Pit Is Interesting, Fights Won't Be

This video shows something called the Yamma Pit, a new version of a mixed martial arts cage in which the center of the pit is lower than the perimeter. The inventor of the Pit says forcing fighters to go uphill to get near the cage will make the fights more entertaining by keeping them mostly in the middle of the Pit:

(Video via MMA Mania) The Yamma Pit looks interesting, and I think there may be some potential there to create better fights, but the first Yamma Pit Fighting card is anything but interesting. The card will feature an eight-man heavyweight tournament, which means that the two who make the final will have to fight three fights in one night. I'm not crazy about the tournament style -- I think one of the best things UFC did was to get rid of it -- and I also have no interest in seeing any of the eight heavyweights they got for this card.

And then there's the main event, which features Eric "Butterbean" Esch against Pat Smith. I can't believe this is the second day in a row I've mentioned Butterbean, but suffice to say that if you're an MMA promoter and you're putting Butterbean on your card, no one is going to take you seriously.
