UFC Founder announces YAMMA Pit Fighting

UFC Founder Bob Meyrowitz and his Rope Partners group announced today the formation of a new mixed martial arts promotion, "YAMMA Pit Fighting."

This marks Meyrowitz's return to the sport since selling the UFC to Zuffa in 2001. Meyrowitz, with Art Davie and Rorian Gracie, started the UFC in 1993.

The first YPF event, which will be televised via pay-per-view, is scheduled for April 11 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.

YPF will focus on a tournament format for its shows as well as taking a page out of the IFL's book -- the "Masters Superfights," which will be bouts between MMA legends.

The YPF will another twist by changing the platform where the fights take place. "The YPF surface, known as 'The YAMMA' is an evolution of the traditional fighting ring that will greatly alter the current basis of MMA by changing how the fight is fought and the strategy the fighters must use to win," the press release states. "This new surface has been specifically designed to keep the fighting more explosive and continuous."

Th YPF has been in the works for a while. Meyrowitz pitched the promotion as a reality TV show to cable networks in the summer of 2006.

"It's with great excitement that we launch YAMMA Pit Fighting," Bob Meyrowitz said in a statement. "Our deep and proven knowledge of the entertainment and MMA spheres put us in a great position to add a new dimension to the presentation of MMA as it moves into the future."
