December's UFC 79 card was dealt a major blow today with the news that welterweight champion Matt Serra is injured and will not be able to fight Matt Hughes.UFC announced on its official web site that Serra suffered a herniated disc in his back during routine training on Monday. UFC President Dana White acknowledged that it's grim news for his organization:
"This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other, said White.UFC has heavily promoted the Serra-Hughes fight as the centerpiece of UFC 79, which takes place on Dec. 29. Without that fight, the Chuck Liddell-Wanderlei Silva fight becomes the main event, and UFC 79 becomes a lot less interesting."Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon."
