UFC announced on its official web site that Serra suffered a herniated disc in his back during routine training on Monday. UFC President Dana White acknowledged that it's grim news for his organization:
"This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other, said White.UFC has heavily promoted the Serra-Hughes fight as the centerpiece of UFC 79, which takes place on Dec. 29. Without that fight, the Chuck Liddell-Wanderlei Silva fight becomes the main event, and UFC 79 becomes a lot less interesting."Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon."
