I imagine the good people of the Vancouver, British Columbia City Council getting a smug sense of self-satisfaction when they decided to ban mixed martial arts last week. But as Shelley Fralic writes in the Vancouver Sun, it was an incredibly stupid decision.
"Why are contact sports like hockey, boxing, wrestling and football legally suitable for public consumption in Vancouver, but not ultimate fighting?" Fralic asks. "UFC is, well, you know, so unseemly, so monster truckish. C'mon, they fight in cages, for heaven's sake, like animals."
Whether you like it or not, mixed martial arts is a legitimate sport, a sport with rules and regulations. MMA is safer than boxing and it's probably safer than football, too. Banning it is dumb.
