Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic was supposed to be the Ultimate Fighting Championship's next big heavyweight star before Gabriel Gonzaga knocked him out with a brutal high kick at UFC 70.
Today in London, Cro Cop was supposed to get back on the path toward stardom with what was thought to be an easy fight against Cheick Kongo. It didn't work out that way, though, as Cro Cop lost a unanimous decision to Kongo, a decision that makes it clear that Cro Cop was never worthy of the hype surrounding him.
Clearly, I was wrong to refer to Kongo as a "sacrificial lamb" -- he came in ready to fight, and after losing the first round, won the second and third rounds convincingly. The betting odds had Cro Cop as a huge favorite, and anyone who put money on Kongo must be very, very happy right now.
