UFC 73: Sean Sherk Beats Hermes Franca

Sean Sherk defended his UFC lightweight title tonight, defeating his Brazilian challenger Hermes Franca with an outstanding performance that raises the question of whether anyone in the lightweight class has any chance of beating Sherk.

Franca fought as well as could be expected. He was great at the start of rounds, almost catching Sherk in a guillotine just seconds into the first, and landing a brutal knee just seconds into the second. But it became clear late in the fight that Sherk's cardiovascular conditioning was superior, and his unanimous decision was a fairly easy win.

Sherk isn't an extremely exciting fighter, and the crowd booed him at the end. But he's one of the most technically sound fighters you'll ever see. It's hard to envision him losing his lightweight title any time soon.
