The New York Daily News is reporting that pro wrestler Chris Benoit abused gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, also known as the "date-rape drug." The report also indicates that the drug was rampant in the world of pro wrestling in the 1990s. "Everybody in the wrestling business had a liking for GHB back (in the '90s)," says a Benoit family friend. "The whole business was on it."
Although GHB is usually associated with blackouts and memory loss, it has also been used by bodybuilders to boost energy before workouts, and some experts consider it a performance-enhancing drug.
Benoit killed his wife, his son and himself last weekend, and ever since there has been speculation about whether drug use could have played a role. Toxicology reports are not expected back for several weeks.
