UFC 72: Ultimate Fighting Championship Having Trouble Filling the Seats in Ireland

In the United States, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is one of the fastest-growing sports leagues. It's also catching on overseas, but this afternoon's UFC 72 event at The Odyssey in Belfast will not be filled to capacity.
The venue will only seat about 9,000 tonight, with president Dana White acknowledging it will be the first non-sellout "in a long time."

"It's part of our expansion movement into other countries," he explained.

"We're going to take some on the chin. You have to be willing to do that to grow the business. I mean look how long it took us in the United States."

UFC is giving away free tickets in an attempt to fill the house, which UFC Mania calls the luck of the Irish. And while the mixed martial arts fans in Ireland are, indeed, lucky to be getting free tickets, there's not much question that the relative lack of hype surrounding UFC 72 represents a step backward for the sport, both here and abroad.

We'll be live blogging UFC 72 here at FanHouse, with round-by-round updates of all the main card fights. The event starts at 3 p.m. Eastern.
