It was a taekwondo competition of some kind, and it's worth pointing out that taekwondo was accepted as an Olympic sport in large part because it's seen as less dangerous than other forms of combat sports. I think you'd probably have a hard time convincing the person on the receiving end of that kick that taekwondo isn't dangerous.
