What's the State of Japanese MMA?

Feb 24, 2012 - TOKYO -- UFC 144 will mark the promotion's first event in Japan in over 11 years, and its return to the "Land of the Rising Sun" has forced the MMA community to once again figure out just how healthy the Japanese MMA scene is. With that in mind, we hit the streets of Tokyo to find out whether the locals were UFC fans and why they think MMA has fallen on hard times in the country.

For most of Ariel’s questions they showed 5-6 groups of people responding to it, but with the Ben Fowlkes question, they only showed 2 responses (i think). It seems pretty obvious that most people had heard of you, but Ariel insisted those responses didn’t make it into the video.

another consolation is

if you’d asked Japanese public about Ariel Helwani, both of you would have been tied at zero. The only MMA reporter with a chance would have been Herbertson.

Great Piece, Ariel and Team

Good job, Ariel. I think this is one of your best videos. I hope you come to sweden and do the same. Don’t worry, we speak excellent swedish.

And the japanese girls are hot!

Damn

That was one hell of a piece. It seems like a lot of people are so used to watching MMA on TV that once the shows dried out they forgot about the sport. If that’s the case then UFC 144 won’t really make a difference seeing as they’re replaying the event at midnight local time on a tiny channel.

I can't believe only 20ish thousand people are going to be there...

When I was looking the stadium up a while ago I thought they would be selling 40+k tickets. I think they should have had a HW or LWH main event, the Japanese seemed to like watching big guys fight back in the Pride days. It’s hard to get so many fighters synced up, but having more Pride guys on this card probably would have made it a bigger deal for the Japanese fans.

Instead of asking him who "the famous" Ben Fowkes is

You should of got him to point up in sky and say GODZILLA!!!…that would’ve been awesome.

Great stuff Ariel

Tokyo seems like an awesome place. I wonder if there is enough exposure to the UFC in Japan, do they have access to UFC events on TV or PPV? If its true that they don’t have access to it on TV, that is surely the first step to reignite interest in Japan.

by Immortal_JL on Feb 24, 2012 1:10 PM EST reply actions

It could happen to you

I don’t know how big MMA was in Japan at its peak or what level saturation or name recognition its leagues had at that time, but it’s interesting to see how quickly things can recede. UFC seems like a juggernaut that will only get bigger and bigger, but who knows. If they aren’t smart about the business or deals fall through or other unexpected problems crop up, I suppose they could fizzle out too and then we’d be saying, “Yeah I used to watch MMA but it just isn’t really around anymore.”

by Jester II on Feb 24, 2012 1:12 PM EST reply actions

I doubt it...

The momentum the UFC has right now is incredible, I really dont see it “fizzling out”, as you said. I think the one thing that could at least slow down the UFC is if (heaven forbid) they lost a fighter. There have been deaths in mma before, although never in the UFC, and there are deaths in boxing almost every year. A boxer, Duk Koo Kim, died in the Caesars palace Arena, and it had a HUGE effect on boxing. If the same happened to the UFC I’m not sure they would recover as a lot of the AC’s might think twice about sanctioning MMA.

Love this

I have always loved Ariels videos but this was pretty cool. I’d like to see this everywhere.. Brazil, UK and even some of the smaller shows in the states. Really good coverage and promotion. Also the Rampage walk video would be cool with other fighters as well. Good work!!!

What irks me

is that some people who say they’re MMA fans say they didn’t know about the event, and they would have gone if they knew. It sounds to me like they could have done more with advertising. Maybe they need to look for a good Japanese sponsor.

Yeah it sounds like everyone there was caught unaware,

The case I always heard was

Sure people watch TV in Japan but only a few stations carry fights and not alot of people have those stations.

Thats me and Marco Antonio Barrera in the profile picture.

A couple good takes from people on the street.

Otherwise, interesting how they sound like me trying to remember back a couple of Olympics ago. Hard to judge, but sure doesn’t sound like most are interested, unless it’s presented to them on television. Not a real hardcore base on display there, although it’s not much of a sample. Great stuff from Ariel though. Killing it in Japan, and hanging out with cute Zooey Deschanel Japanese girls!

There's a bunch of reasons why MMA isn't big in Japan anymore

- Yakuza influence is too heavy. To run any kind of combat sports event in Japan, including professional wrestling, the Yakuza are involved on some level, be it with the venue, or behind the scenes with financial backing. Now with the various Yakuza families under heavier watch by the government and law enforcement, all combat sports events and promoters get checked out from top to bottom. So it’s hard to put on a combat sports event with no Yakuza involvement or being heavily scrutinized by the government.

- TV stations just don’t show it. In the US, there’s a lot of free shows to garner interest for bigger events. FX, Fox, Fuel TV all have free UFC shows. In Japan, MMA events are strictly PPV. They’ll have condensed replays on regular TV, like highlight shows, but entire events for DREAM, Sengoku, etc… are shown on PPV. If a similar business model were done in Japan where the smaller events were shown on normal TV like Samurai-TV, Tokyo-TV, etc… it would garner more interest in MMA.

- MMA in Japan rates below professional wrestling. In Japan, even though MMA is a legit athletic competition, it’s still treated as entertainment. Pro Wrestling in Japan is treated more as a serious thing. Including the WWE, which is based in the US gets a lot of respect in Japan.

- There are no Japanese fighters who are among the best in MMA. People identify more to a product when they see someone like them among the best. That’s why Basketball isn’t big in Japan, that’s why American Football isn’t big in Japan, and that’s why MMA isn’t big in Japan. There are no Japanese who are among the best in those sports. If a Japanese fighter were to become a legit contender for a title in the UFC, and were featured prominently, I guarantee you that Japanese fans would be more interested.

by David Aaron on Feb 24, 2012 5:29 PM EST reply actions

The main reason is that the fad has passed.

Even if a big card were put on TV, it likely would not do huge numbers. The Dream shows that were on TV did so-so numbers, but nothing like it once did.

As David said, MMA was treated as entertainment and they never actually built up new stars. And even those that did come, like Aoki, never gained popularity.

Kid Yamamoto was one of the last with any sort of mainstream popularity.

At this point, it is unlikely that the next five years will see MMA gain any sort of momentum in Japan. You have die hard fans, but that is a small core audience. Unless a Japanese fighter comes along with huge charisma, it will remain a niche sport. And even if one did come along, there is still a very real chance that he would be poorly booked and thrown in with somebody much larger.

Ariel, great job, Man. You always find a way to make me laugh and appreciate a good interview at the same time. LOL Also, like the wrap words at the end. Nice touch. Keep up the great work.

Very good video, Ariel.

I have to say though it seemed like that guy at the end seemed pretty informed. It would’ve been interesting to get a couple follow-ups from him. I wonder how much the Yakuza had to do with the decline of MMA in Japan.
