Fitch Lobbying for GSP Rematch With Finish of Alves
By Michael David SmithPosted: Mar 17th 2010 11:20 AM
As Jon Fitch prepares for his UFC 111 bout with Thiago Alves, he's lobbying for a welterweight title rematch with Georges St. Pierre, and he's got his talking points down pat.
"I've cleaned out one side of the weight class, [Alves has] cleaned out the other. I beat him, it's kind of like putting all those wins in my back pocket, too," Fitch says in the upcoming Countdown to UFC 111 show. "If I could stop Thiago Alves I did something twice that GSP couldn't do in five rounds."

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Paulo Thiago Is for Real
By Michael David SmithPosted: Feb 10th 2010 9:55 AM
Paulo Thiago is better than anyone thought he was. When Thiago first signed with the UFC, his 10-0 record looked impressive, but no one gave him much of a chance against his first opponent, Josh Koscheck. And even after Thiago won that fight with a first-round TKO, most people thought he benefited from a lucky punch and a quick stoppage.
But now that Thiago has also beaten Mike Swick at UFC 109, there's no disputing that he's a Top 10 welterweight. Where exactly does Thiago rank? Find out below in our latest rankings of the Top 10 welterweights in MMA.
Thiago Alves Predicts Jon Fitch Knockout at UFC 111
By Ariel HelwaniPosted: Feb 10th 2010 8:00 AM
Thiago Alves has only lost twice since 2006. That's two losses in nine fights. And those are the only two losses that are currently on "The Pitbull's" mind these days. First things first, avenge his Ultimate Fight Night 5 loss to Jon Fitch at UFC 111 on March 27. Then, the American Top Team says he is ready for another shot at welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who defeated him via unanimous decision at UFC 100. MMA Fighting recently caught up with Alves to talk about his recent injury, which forced him to pull out of a UFC 107 fight against Fitch, the lessons he learned in the loss to GSP and a potential fight against Paul Daley in the future. Check out the video interview below.
MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Nick Diaz Proves He's for Real
By Michael David SmithPosted: Feb 2nd 2010 9:36 AM
Nick Diaz finally returned to his natural weight class of 170 pounds on Saturday night at Strikeforce Miami, and he put on a show. Diaz easily dominated Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis, winning the Strikeforce welterweight belt and showing that he's one of the best in the world at his weight class. In fact, I think he's the one welterweight in all of MMA who would give Georges St. Pierre a real run for his money. Unfortunately, as long as Diaz is in Strikeforce and GSP is in the UFC, we won't get to see that match-up. But as you'll see in my rankings of the top 10 welterweights below, Diaz is in elite territory.
Jon Fitch: If I Stop Thiago Alves, I'm Next for GSP
By Michael David SmithPosted: Jan 23rd 2010 7:45 AM
Jon Fitch will face Thiago Alves at UFC 111 in a bout that Fitch thinks gives him a clear opportunity to earn a shot at welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre."If I stop him, I don't see how they could deny me a shot at GSP," Fitch said on HDNet's Inside MMA. "At that point I would have stopped someone twice that GSP couldn't finish in five rounds, so I think that's a very strong argument for me to get a title shot."

Matt Hughes has received word from the UFC that his return could happen at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event on April 10, 2010. "I'll tell you later who and where when I find out for sure if it is confirmed," the 36-year-old former UFC welterweight champion wrote Monday evening on his official blog.
UFC Targeting Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy for UFC 111 in March
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Nov 25th 2009 3:15 PM
The UFC is targeting a March 2010 date for welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre's title defense with No. 1 contender Dan Hardy, a source with knowledge of the situation told FanHouse.
Once formally agreed to by both sides, the matchup would likely be the main event of UFC 111, which is expected to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
The 28-year-old St. Pierre (19-2) is one of MMA's hottest commodities after signing major sponsorship deals with Gatorade and Under Armour within the last year. He has been out of action since injuring his groin during the course of a successful defense against Thiago Alves at July's UFC 100.
MMA Top 10 Welterweights: Josh Koscheck Is Right, Sort Of
By Michael David SmithPosted: Nov 23rd 2009 8:16 AM
After his UFC 106 victory over Anthony Johnson, Josh Koscheck proclaimed that he -- not Dan Hardy -- deserves to be the next contender to Georges St Pierre's title. As you'll see in my rankings of the Top 10 welterweights in MMA, I think Koscheck is right -- sort of. I believe Koscheck deserves to be higher-ranked than Hardy, but I also think Hardy is more deserving of a shot at St. Pierre. The reason is simple: Koscheck has already had a fight with GSP, losing to him at UFC 74. Hardy hasn't gotten his chance yet.
So because I'd like to see GSP get a new challenge, I think Hardy is a fitting No. 1 contender, even though Hardy is just below Koscheck on the list below.
