MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Cruz, Benavidez Belong
By Michael David SmithPosted: Mar 12th 2010 11:00 AM
Two of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts were in the cage Saturday night at WEC 47. They just weren't the two we thought they were beforehand.Prior to WEC 47, a lot of people had bantamweights Brian Bowles and Miguel Torres in their top 10 pound-for-pound lists. (Bowles was No. 7 on my list and Torres fell just outside the top 10.) But after Dominick Cruz beat Bowles and Joseph Benavidez beat Torres, the two WEC 47 winners are both on my list of the Top 10 fighters in mixed martial arts, which is below.
Who Might Get the First Crack at James Toney in the UFC?
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Mar 3rd 2010 6:51 PM
In processing the news of James Toney signing with the UFC, the mind quickly shifts to who Toney will face in his maiden voyage in the octagon. While Dana White had no information on a date or opponent to give MMA Fighting while confirming his signing, it's always fun to speculate on who it could be.There is a set of assumptions we can make about a prospective opponent. First, rather than risk a promising young fighter losing to Toney and losing momentum, it's safe to assume the UFC will try to match him with a veteran. So guys like Cain Velasquez and Todd Duffee are probably out. Second, the promotion will pair him with a name fighter. At 41 years old, Toney's days in MMA are limited, and the UFC knows they need to cash in immediately. Third, Toney won't get a gimme in his first time out; he wants a big payday, and he knows there are only a few opponents who will bring it. Finally, weight class doesn't matter. I have a feeling Toney's first time out may well be a catch weight.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will return to the Octagon after more than a year away from mixed martial arts when he takes on Rashad Evans in May at UFC 114. But just because he's coming back doesn't mean he has a passion for his sport. In an interview with Fighters Only, Jackson said that he likes acting better than MMA, and he looks forward to leaving the UFC once he fulfills his contractual obligations.

Rampage Jackson to Make UFC Return at UFC 110 ... Sort of
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Feb 10th 2010 5:07 PM
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson hasn't been seen in the vicinty of a UFC octagon in over six months. His last UFC bout was nearly a year ago, and since his feud with UFC president Dana White went public last fall, he's been seen mostly in stills from his upcoming "A-Team" movie, on TMZ and other Hollywood shows.
But the former UFC light-heavyweight champion will at least temporarily be back in the UFC fold when the organization makes its maiden voyage to Australia for UFC 110 on Feb. 20.

By Michael David SmithPosted: Feb 9th 2010 1:45 PM

After Randy Couture beat Mark Coleman at UFC 109, UFC President Dana White said Couture is one of the top five or six light heavyweights in the world.
But while Couture looked good against Coleman, he's going to have to win at least one more fight at light heavyweight before he makes my Top 10. The updated rankings of the Top 10 light heavyweights in MMA are below.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Credit to Rashad Evans
By Michael David SmithPosted: Jan 5th 2010 9:25 AM
Rashad Evans probably doesn't get enough credit as one of the truly elite athletes in mixed martial arts. Maybe after his win on Saturday night over Thiago Silva at UFC 108, he will.Evans showed off his excellent wrestling base in repeatedly taking Silva down on Saturday night, and although he nearly lost the fight in the third round, he showed a lot of heart in weathering some powerful combinations from Silva, one of the light heavyweight division's most dangerous strikers.
And so, even though he needs another win or maybe two before he'll be back in title contention, I have Evans in my list of the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world, which is below.
