UFC 103 Notes: White on Mayweather, Escudero's Hospital Trip and More
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Sep 20th 2009 5:32 AM
DALLAS -- While Floyd Mayweather managed to steal most of the major sports headlines away from UFC 103 on Saturday night, UFC President Dana White was in full belief he put on the better event. How did he know? Because even though White was in the midst of a 13-fight card, he bought the Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez fight and had it playing on a monitor near him.
"It sucked," he said. "It sucked just like I said it would and knew it would."
Can Rich Frankin vs. Vitor Belfort Win Bitter Battle Over PPV Consumers?
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Sep 18th 2009 6:11 PM
DALLAS -- In the weeks leading up to Sept. 19's dueling pay-per-view events, words have been exchanged by many of the particulars over whether boxing or UFC will have the bigger night.
Most of the verbal war has been waged by boxing headliner Floyd Mayweather and UFC President Dana White, who of course doubles as the his company's lead hype man. Not surprisingly, UFC 103's headliners Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort have been stone silent on the issue. Boxing promoter Bob Arum, who infamously badmouthed MMA fans as "skinheads watching guys who look like skinheads," might want to take note of the two men atop the card.
Dana White Disses Mayweather-Marquez
By Ariel HelwaniPosted: Sep 10th 2009 7:25 AM
Dana White hasn't cooled off on HBO boxing's decision to air the Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez boxing match on Sept. 19 -- the same night as UFC 103.
In a new video released by the UFC on Wednesday, which contains some obscene language, White took a few more jabs at his pay-per-view counterparts.
Floyd Mayweather, Golden Boy 'Not Worried' About UFC 103 Competition
By Ariel HelwaniPosted: Sep 1st 2009 6:30 PM
The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight will be the first high-profile boxing match to go up against a major UFC pay-per-view on the same night in quite some time. How many pay-per-view buys both shows generate will tell an interesting story as to which sport controls the interest of the general mainstream sports public. But if you think Mayweather or Golden Boy Promotions is concerned about competing for eye balls with the red-hot UFC on September 19, think again.
Dana White Says UFC Won't Back Down From Opposing Floyd Mayweather Event
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Aug 7th 2009 8:26 PM
PHILADELPHIA -- Floyd Mayweather may still be unbeaten in the ring, but he may get the biggest challenge of his life on the business front later this year. On Sept. 19, Mayweather's comeback bout against Juan Manuel Marquez will go head-to-head with UFC 103 on pay-per-view, and UFC President Dana White isn't backing down.
"I didn't plan on going head-to-head with them. They're weird like that," White said at a UFC 101 question-and-answer session with fans. "We had that date, and everyone asked them to go off that date but for some reason they like to fight with us."
Floyd Mayweather Really Doesn't Sound Like a Guy Who Is Staying Retired
By Josh AlperPosted: Jul 8th 2008 12:35 PM
When Floyd Mayweather announced his retirement from the boxing ring, it wasn't hard to see him switching gears and making a return. He's a boxer, never a group known for keeping their word, he's "retired" before and a marketable name. The sport doesn't have so many of those and someone was surely going to offer enough cash to at least make him think twice about staying on the sideline. It's getting even harder to believe that Mayweather is finished. His comments about HBO announcers would seem to burn bridges but I don't see it that way. He's telling HBO that if they want to televise his return to the ring, they'd be well advised to change their broadcast to one that suits him better. That's just part of the reason why it feels like we'll see Mayweather in gloves again. He premiered a documentary about himself at a party in Grand Rapids. It included the following soundbite.
"Oscar De La Hoya, (expletive) you and (expletive) everything you stand for. I don't like you, you don't like me."Mayweather's retirement eliminated the chance at a rematch between them this fall but it's hard to see that comment as closing the door for good. De La Hoya-Mayweather is still the biggest money fight in the boxing world and fanning the flames will only make for a bigger pile of cash. The man's nickname is "Money" and boxing is going to be the best way he can keep getting it.

Floyd Mayweather Rips HBO, Says, 'I've Seen Jim Lampley in the Same Strip Club as Me'
By Michael David SmithPosted: Jul 5th 2008 5:09 PM
The recently retired boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather made tens of millions of dollars from his contracts with HBO. But in an interview with his hometown newspaper, the Grand Rapids Press, he ripped HBO for the way it covered his fights.Mayweather was particularly critical of HBO's lead boxing announcer, Jim Lampley, who, according to Mayweather, criticizes Mayweather's personal behavior while engaging in the same behavior himself:
"Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, Emanuel Steward, they're always talking about the negative things in my life," Mayweather said. "But I've seen Jim Lampley in the same strip club as me before. They always want to talk about me going to strip clubs, but they don't want to talk about that."Mayweather noted that he was criticized on HBO after pleading no contest to assault, even though Lampley himself is currently on probation for violating a restraining order brought by his ex-girlfriend:
"He caught a court case himself, too. But when they catch a case, all they do is take them off the air a couple weeks, then it's over.Although he doesn't come out and say so, Mayweather sounds like a man who could be convinced to return to the ring if he had a more favorable relationship with a television partner. I hope that happens.
Will Floyd Mayweather Try MMA? 'It's Possible'
By Michael David SmithPosted: Mar 28th 2008 1:27 PM
Floyd Mayweather, the world's best boxer, is making the media rounds this week to promote his upcoming appearance at Wrestlemania XXIV.And today on ESPN First Take, Mayweather was asked the question a lot of fans want to know: Might he try mixed martial arts after he finishes up his wrestling gig? Mayweather has made public comments for at least a year saying that he thinks he could become a champion in MMA, and Mark Cuban has suggested that he'd make Mayweather an attractive financial offer if he wanted to join up with Cuban's fledgling MMA organization. So will Mayweather do it?
"It's possible," Mayweather said. "You know, we don't know." When asked to put the likelihood that he'll fight in mixed martial arts on a scale of 1 to 10, Mayweather put it at 5. So that clears up absolutely nothing.
Mayweather spoke highly of Cuban, saying that as a self-made millionaire who would like to make even more money, he enjoys picking the brain of self-made billionaires like Cuban. But he wouldn't commit one way or another to whether he might actually enter into that type of business relationship with Cuban.
I think Mayweather would have a better chance of success in MMA than UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva would in boxing, but I seriously doubt either one is actually going to do it. When you're on the top of the world in one sport, would you really want to leave it for another?
