UFC 107: Stefan Struve Beats Paul Buentello by Decision

By Michael David SmithPosted: Dec 12th 2009 10:37 PM

Stefan Struve beat Paul Buentello by majority decision in a hard-fought heavyweight battle at UFC 107 Saturday night in Memphis.

Struve, who at 6-foot-11 is the tallest fighter in the UFC, leveled Buentello with an uppercut early in the first round and then dominated him on the ground throughout, controlling Buentello on the ground and trying -- but failing -- to sink in a rear-naked choke. Buentello did next to nothing throughout the first, but he did survive what was a fairly slow and boring round.

Veteran Buentello Puts Headaches Behind Him, Ready for Struve at UFC 107

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Dec 8th 2009 11:58 AM

When Affliction Entertainment shuttered its doors for good, there was only one place Paul Buentello wanted to go: the UFC. The veteran heavyweight longed for the stability that MMA's biggest organization provided. Luckily for him, the UFC was also interested in the reunion, and the sides came to terms.

At UFC 107 on Dec. 12, Buentello (24-10) will return to the octagon for the first time in over three years. Originally scheduled to take on top prospect Todd Duffee, he was thrown a changeup when Duffee had to back out due to injury. Instead, "The Headhunter" will have to quite literally aim higher, facing the intriguing 6-foot-11 Dutch fighter Stefan Struve (18-3).

Just a few days before the bout, Buentello took some time to talk to FanHouse about his reasons for returning to the UFC, facing a giant, longing for a rematch with Alistair Overeem, and putting his past difficulties in the rearview mirror.

Dos Santos Hopes to Follow Teammates Silva, Nogueira as Champ

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Sep 20th 2009 8:14 AM

DALLAS -- With a small sample size of fights to analyze, it's sometimes difficult to accurately assess whether a young fighter is a contender or pretender. But in the case of Junior Dos Santos, it seems safe to say he falls into the first category.

The Brazilian striker looked crisp and powerful in his demolition of Mirko Cro Cop. The Croatian verbally submitted after complaining of vision problems, but the outcome was virtually assured by then. Dos Santos was simply bigger, faster and better.

UFC 99 Weigh-In Results: Cro Cop Cheered, Silva Chiseled, Lots of Shoving

By Michael David SmithPosted: Jun 12th 2009 9:48 AM

All 24 fighters stepped on the scales Friday in Cologne, Germany, for an eventful UFC 99 weigh-in. The loudest cheers were for Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who will have the crowd on his side fighting a day's drive from his home in Croatia. Wanderlei Silva, fighting at a catchweight of 195 pounds for the first time in the main event against Rich Franklin, looked chiseled as he stepped on the scale at one pound under the limit. And two shoving matches broke out during stare-downs featuring undercard fighters: Denis Stojnic and Stefan Struve got a little too close and UFC President Dana White had to break them up, and then Paul Kelly bumped heads with Rolando Delgado, prompting Delgado to respond with a hard push. White could be heard saying, "Don't put your hands on each other" when the next pair of fighters had their stare-down.

Video is here and full weigh-in results are below.

By Michael David SmithPosted: Dec 26th 2008 6:51 AM

UFC fans have been wondering when they'll see Junior "Cigano" dos Santos again ever since he burst onto the scene with a first-round knockout of Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90. Now we have the answer: Cigano will take on Stefan Struve at UFC 95 in London.

Struve is a lanky, 6-foot-8, UFC newcomer from the Netherlands who has an impressive 16-2 record, but he hasn't faced any opponents with names familiar to most American MMA fans. Sherdog reports that the Cigano-Struve fight has been signed for February 21.

Other fights expected to be part of the UFC 95 card include Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson, Nate Marquardt vs. Wilson Gouveia, Rory Markham vs. Dan Hardy, Justin Buchholz vs. Terry Etim and Shannon Gugerty vs. Jeff Lawson.
