One-Armed MMA Fighter Nick Newell Brings Big Dreams to Pro Debut

Like any mixed martial artist just beginning his pro career, Nick Newell has big dreams.
He wants to go as far as his mind can imagine, win a few belts, make some nice paydays, fight in a big promotion like DREAM, Strikeforce, even the UFC.
But Newell won't only have to overcome opponents to get there; he'll have to overcome a physical disability. The 23-year-old lightweight fighter, who will be making his pro debut this Saturday at a Cage Fighting Xtreme show in Plymouth, Mass., was born without a left hand. His arm ends just below the elbow.

Kyle Maynard's amateur mixed martial arts debut may have generated a considerable amount of media attention in the days leading up to his fight, but the buzz ended there.The promoter of the event, David Oblas, told FanHouse earlier Monday that only "around 100 people" purchased the online pay-per-view on Saturday night. 1,200 people attended the fight at the Auburn Covered Arena in Auburn, Ala.
"The pay-per-view was never designed to make money," Oblas said. "It was just for people who wanted to see the fight live."

This Saturday, Kyle Maynard, a congenital amputee with no elbows or knees, will make his amateur mixed martial arts debut at the Auburn Covered Arena in Auburn, Ala. The 2004 ESPY winner for "best athlete with a disability" captured the attention of the nation en route to a 35-16 high school amateur wrestling record.
Next, he looks to defy the odds yet again by tackling the world of MMA. I spoke to the 23-year-old about the scrutiny he has received for deciding to compete in MMA and why the details surrounding his debut have been kept under wraps. The full interview is below.
