Herschel Walker Yes, Jose Canseco No for Strikeforce

By Michael David SmithPosted: Feb 26th 2010 7:00 AM

Jose CansecoAlthough there were plenty of critics, Herschel Walker did everything right when he made his mixed martial arts debut last month: He said all the right things, he took his training seriously, he showed respect for the sport and for opponent Greg Nagy, and he left the cage with his hand raised.

So it's no surprise that Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says he hopes Walker makes a return to the cage. But Coker said Jose Canseco, who has been talking up a potential fight between himself and Walker, will not be fighting in Strikeforce.

Matt Millen Would Love to Try MMA

By Michael David SmithPosted: Feb 4th 2010 4:53 PM

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The 47-year-old former football star Herschel Walker has received a lot of attention since winning his mixed martial arts debut on Saturday night. One former player who was particularly interested in how Walker did was Matt Millen -- who's even older than Walker but says he'd love to try MMA himself.

"I thought about doing it," said Millen, who was an NFL linebacker from 1980 to 1991, was the Lions' general manager from 2000 to 2008 and is currently an ESPN analyst. "I'm 52 years old but I'd love to try it, just to stay in shape."

Millen has no illusions that he'd actually be a competitive pro fighter at his age, but he says he has so much respect for the sport and its athletes that he'd love to train with them and learn from them.

Herschel Walker: 'I Will Hurt' Jose Canseco

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Feb 3rd 2010 12:32 PM

Herschel Walker has heard Jose Canseco's challenge to fight, and he is not amused.

The 47-year-old is still doing media rounds following his weekend win over Greg Nagy in his professional MMA debut for Strikeforce. Speaking to the Dallas-based Bob and Dan Radio show, Walker cautioned Canseco for calling him out and said he didn't think Canseco realized how serious he is about MMA and his training.

Saying he knew Canseco was simply hoping for a quick payday, Walker said if they ever actually got into a cage, things would end badly for the former baseball slugger.

Is The Hourglass Running Out on Randy Couture?

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Feb 3rd 2010 10:01 AM

Every time the hourglass seems to be running out of sand, Randy Couture flips it over and starts fresh.

At 46, Couture is one of the world's oldest active mixed martial artists, and aside from the recently debuting Herschel Walker, the oldest to fight for a major organization. Without question, he is the most decorated MMA fighter in his age group, but that's not a distinction he particularly cares for. To him, it's simple: either he's capable of competing with the very best in the world, or he's not.

Want evidence? Just ask the man who's preparing to face Mark Coleman at Saturday's UFC 109 about his interest level in fighting the winner of the upcoming Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua light-heavyweight title fight.

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Feb 2nd 2010 2:30 PM

Jose Canseco has never been one to miss a chance to take a shortcut or get his name in the news, so it should come to little surprise to anyone when the self-admitted juicer seized upon someone else's success in an attempt to steal the spotlight for himself.

His latest target: Herschel Walker.

Writing on his Twitter account, which amazingly has over 320,000 followers, Canseco wrote, "I guess I may have to show Herschel Walker who the real bad Boy of the Sports industry is. If the powers that be are reading, I want in."
