MMA Top 10 Lightweights: Edgar Is the Best, Maynard on His Heels

By Michael David SmithPosted: Aug 31st 2010 8:12 AM

No one can doubt Frankie Edgar anymore.

After Edgar beat B.J. Penn by unanimous decision in April, a lot of people believed that the fight was a fluke, that the judges erred, and that Penn was still the best lightweight in mixed martial arts. But now that Edgar has defeated Penn once again at UFC 118, there's no room for debate: Edgar is the undisputed champion.

Except that Edgar has one loss on his record, and that one loss is to Gray Maynard, who has been anointed the next challenger to Edgar's title. Maynard could make a case that he deserves to be considered the top fighter in the division, but unless he makes that case again in the cage, I'm sticking with Edgar at No. 1. The rest of the rankings are below.

Brock Lesnar Mirrors Life Comeback With Come-From-Behind Submission Win

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Jul 4th 2010 2:36 AM

LAS VEGAS -- In a comeback that mirrored his real-life struggle and triumph, Brock Lesnar overcame a horrific opening round that nearly saw him finished before rallying to defeat Shane Carwin in a career-defining, second-round arm triangle submission at UFC 116.

Overcome with emotion, Lesnar immediately dedicated the win to his family, the doctors who helped him through his recent health scare and the training team that helped him rebuild to championship status as he won over the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd that went from booing lustily to a standing ovation upon the finish.

"It's just great to win," Lesnar said after the fight. "Honest to God, what I've been through since Nov. 6 to this point, it feels like it's been 10 years. It's been a grueling, grueling road. I can say this: I remember when I was lying there, [my trainer] Marty Morgan at my hospital bed from day one. To be here, it really is truly a miracle. To come back from all that and to be here and win, words cannot describe it. I feel like I'm in a dream."

Lesnar Taller, Carwin Heavier, but Numbers Don't Matter Saturday

By Mike ChiappettaPosted: Jul 2nd 2010 8:49 PM

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time, it seems tangible, reachable. Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin are licensed, weighed and ready to rumble at UFC 116.

After two postponements, an illness and an interim title bout, the two biggest and best heavyweights in the UFC squared off after weighing in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Friday night.

First off, let's get a couple things out of the way. Carwin is at least an inch shorter than Lesnar. They looked the same height during the customary face-off because Carwin put his sneakers on beforehand. Second, Lesnar's official weight is indeed 265. While some believe that Nevada state athletic commission rep Keith Kizer motioned 264 and announcer Joe Rogan misspoke, MMA Fighting confirmed with Kizer that 265 is indeed the official weight.

Writer vs. Fighter: UFC 116 Predictions With Mike Swick

By Ben FowlkesPosted: Jul 2nd 2010 7:56 PM

After finishing 10th out of over 2500 competitors in last week's World Series of Poker, UFC fighter Mike Swick must be feeling pretty lucky. Either that, or he was not intimidated by my 0-3 record in Writer vs. Fighter and saw a chance for an easy victory. Whatever the reason, Swick was gracious enough to agree to face me in a UFC 116 prediction contest this afternoon, and for that I thank him.

I may have gotten smoked by "Babalu" Sobral in last week's match-up, but I'm trying to stay positive. I figure it can only help me that I got Swick to make his predictions after he'd stayed up until 5 a.m. playing poker in Las Vegas, where he says he's been doing "very well."

Well Mr. Swick, prepare to have your fortunes changed. Maybe. Hopefully.

Kurt Pellegrino Says He'll Never Tap, Will Retire if He Loses Another Fight

By Ben FowlkesPosted: May 3rd 2010 2:36 PM

Kurt Pellegrino may be riding an impressive four-fight win streak in the UFC, but he still seems to think he could be just one loss away from retirement.

That's what he claims anyway, saying in the past that his next loss would prompt him to quit the sport for good. When asked by Ariel Helwani on this week's episode of The MMA Hour whether he was willing to stick to that claim, the lightweight contender affirmed that it wasn't just idle talk.

"I told my wife and daughter, if there's someone out there who can beat me, I have to start all over again. I'm at the bottom...and I don't know if I can do that."
