Feb 7, 2012 - In the aftermath of UFC 143, there seems to be much consternation and hand wringing. Did Carlos Condit really win that fight? What's the difference between running and strategy? Is Diaz really going to retire? What's with Herb Dean's really inconsistent refereeing?
Since there's so much to discuss, let's do it. Beginning today at 1 p.m. ET, we'll kick off a chat here on this post with new ScribbleLive technology. You can leave comments, questions, Tweets, Facebook updates and any other form of relevant or modern communication. There's a ton of different ways to get involved. I don't care which method you chose, so long as you participate.
In addition to the aforementioned questions, we'll delve into anything you want to talk about. Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger predictions? We can do it. Is it sensible for the UFC to do a show in Japan? We can debate it. Have I said something you take issue with and you want to take me to task? Now's your chance.
I'll talk to you all at 1 pm ET.

please do not address the running vs strategy topic.
That’s for goons. How about a discussion on the objectivity of the judging criteria and how it related to the judges score cards for the diaz vs condit fight. Scores are all over the place, from media, fans and fighters. How can so many people see a fight that is judged on specific criteria so differently?

I feel like you don't like Nick Diaz at all man
You saying Nick doesn’t have the skills to make adjustments? Lol you attack the guy every chance you get. The fight with Condit was close and hopefully we will have a rematch since MANY believe Nick won the fight, including current fighters and even Ariel does also. Hopefully Nick gets the chance for redemption and he finishes Condit and shows you he’s got skills besides the stand up.
CARLOS…DON’T BE SCARED HOMIE!!!

I picked Nick Diaz to win
My point is that he couldn’t switch to a wrestling game. And it’s not like he’s an advanced kickboxer. He has TREMENDOUS skills, but I’m not sure what else he could’ve done there.

All good man
Thanks for answering my question in the chat, actually enjoyed this :)
I’m obviously a huge Diaz fan and wasn’t too happy (still not happy) about the way Condit came to fight. The guy promised an exciting fight, and he came out and avoided “THE” fight and just went for a lame point win on another point game plan by Jackson. The fight was still close regardless and it could of gone Nick’s way also. Hopefully Dana and the rest of the UFC top guys see that and give us the rematch before GSP is back.

Good chat Luke.
Thanks for answering my stupid question about pro-wrestling although I think Nate would catch you Minowaman style in a leg lock.

I'm fed up
with all the talk of how Condit was “running” the whole fight. I thought it was an extremely intense and technical fight, and saw nothing that could be considered “running”. Running and reestablishing the center of the octagon are two VERY different things. I thought it was a great, entertaining fight, and if you can’t appreciate what we got to see on Saturday, then you are either an all-or-nothing Diaz fan or just can’t appreciate the technical aspect of MMA.
Am I really an anomaly for appreciating the technical aspects of fighting??
I had to sign up for an account just because I’m sick of all this BS “running” talk…

I enjoyed the fight as well
You’re not alone brother.

I doubt you’re an anomaly for appreciating the technical aspects of fighting, but lots of people wanted to see a fight. As in two people engaging each other in combat. We were sold a FOTY candidate and it didn’t come close because one participant played a point game instead of fighting.
Few would claim that if this were a street fight, or an early-UFC-rules fight, that Condit could have won. He came in with a plan to win over the judges, and he was successful. It was technical and smart, but not as exciting as we expected.
Maybe you have to be a boxing fan to have really enjoyed it. I’m not a boxing fan because matches bore me to tears. I like fights, not matches. Or maybe you just really need to hate Diaz to enjoy it.
It was supposed to give Hendo-Shogun a run for it’s money, it didn’t come close. Not even remotely.

You said it just right. People dont understand why some fans are upset about this technical battle?? I think we were the only ones that watched the promos, primetime, pre-fight press conference and all of their previous fights…
The reason I am upset is because they are my two favorite fighters and I thought this was going to be fight of the year, to be honest. And who could blame me? Two prepare for this fight, i watched old Condit fights and old Diaz fights.. and about an hour before the fight, i was going to explode with anticipation. I have never been more excited for a fight than this one. Yes, I feel let down and I’m positive this is why soooooooo many people are complaining.
by grizzly907 on Feb 7, 2012 5:39 PM EST up reply actions
to prepare* not two..
by grizzly907 on Feb 7, 2012 5:44 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah
I dug up as many Condit fights as I could find. I dug up all the old Diaz fights too. I couldn’t wait for this fight.
Before this fight, if you had told me that Condit was going to play for the judges and focus on disengagement and counters, I would have called you crazy.
The way people are celebrating this “technical” “brilliance” is baffling to me. I thought we were going to see a fight.
by Tacoknight on Feb 7, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions
dude, i’m with you on that one.. I dont understand how they dont see our point of view. I dont dislike Condit, I think the fight could have gone either way. But its not the way i thought the fight was going to happen.

I said this before and I’ll say it again, I feel like a kid who wanted to see a fireworks spectacular on the 4th of July… but was handed a snakes and sparklers.

I absolutely agree that the fight we got never materialized into the fight that was “promised” to us, and sure, an all out brawl would have been great fun. However, for myself and my friend who watched the fight with me, we thought it was an entertaining fight for what it was. No, it wasn’t the brutal war we all wanted, but it was still an intense chess match that played to the mind more than anything, and let me tell you that we were both on the edges of our seats until the end of each round.
Also on the Hendo-Shogun comment, I think it would be unfair to truly expect ANY fight to turn out like that fight did. When it does, it is absolutely fantastic, and we will all remember it, but I don’t think its right to outright expect anything like that from any two fighters. After all, that was most likely one of the top 5 fights all time.

Well done! Sorry I missed it.
Very incitefull, I will definately join and try to help promote this feature.
On the issue of shrinking the cage: I like the idea of forcing the action but would fear that a smaller fighting area would force a trend toward more wrestling and less striking. If evasive fighting was to become a problem, one fight does not constitute a problem, then maybe but most fighters are going to make the adjustment within the fight to counter that strategy anyway. Other than the recent WWE type drama I like the way the fights and the UFC has evolved.
We may have come in different ships but we’re all in the same boat now.
