"My weight class is 185 and that's the belt I'm going to defend," Silva said hours after his 61-second win over James Irvin Saturday in Las Vegas.
Silva, who walks around at 220 pounds, would have an easier time making weight if he moves up, but Silva doesn't want to interfere with his friend Lyoto Machida's title goal.
"He wants to completely clean out the 185-pound division, which many can argue is only a couple of fights away, but 185 is where he likes to fight," UFC President Dana White said. "He wants to test 205 and that's what he's doing. He's going to take his time and move into that weight class, and who knows? Maybe he'll end up there for good."
Silva will most likely fight Patrick Cote next. Yushin Okami was supposed to be next for Silva, but Okami is out with a broken hand.
