A trilogy fight is in the works for UFC 213.
A matchup between former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem is in the works for the July 8 event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. MMAFighting.com confirmed an initial report Wednesday by FloCombat.
Overeem (42-15, 1 NC) enters the proposed bout the winner of five out of his past six fights, four of them via knockout. His only loss in that stretch was a first-round loss to current UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 203.
Werdum (21-6-1), meanwhile, also has just a loss to Miocic marring his recent run. Werdum has won seven out of his past eight, with a unanimous decision over Travis Browne in his last fight.
The duo have met twice, both in tournament settings. Werdum took their first fight, taking a second-round submission in the opening round of the 2006 PRIDE Grand Prix tourney. Overeem won the rematch in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament in 2011, taking a decision in what was not the most exciting fight in either competitor’s career.
