RIO DE JANEIRO -- Conor McGregor might never return to the featherweight division, but Jose Aldo doesn’t consider the possibility of ending his career without getting his rematch with "The Notorious".
Aldo, who lost to McGregor in 13 seconds last December at UFC 194, faces Frankie Edgar for the interim championship at UFC 200, and seeing "The Notorious" compete outside of the division one more time makes him wonder if he’s ever fighting at 145 pounds again.
"We catch him in the street," Aldo said during a UFC 200 media day in Rio de Janeiro, asked what he would do if McGregor never returned to his division. "No matter how, we will fight. F--k it."
And if the Irishman vacates his featherweight belt after UFC 202, after his rematch with Nate Diaz, Aldo is willing to move up to fight him.
"No way," the Brazilian said when asked about the possibility of retiring without fighting McGregor again. "Only if he stops fighting. As long as he’s in the UFC, this fight will happen. That’s a fact. We will get the belt back and be champion again.
"We’ll move up. The UFC will do this fight. It doesn’t matter at which weight. I don’t care."
Aldo was open to fighting at 155 pounds in the past, but he never did because the UFC wanted him to vacate the featherweight title before trying to win another one.
McGregor still owns the 145-pound championship despite the fact that he’s going for his second bout outside of the division, and Aldo expects the promotion to give him the same opportunity if he wins the featherweight belt and goes after McGregor at a different weight class in the future.
"Only with me? F--k. That would suck," Aldo laughed while talking about the possibility of being forced to vacate his title before going to a different division. "But I don’t think so. We can do a super fight. If that’s the case only with me… No, not again [laughs]."
