As many expected, UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will make his first title defense against Alistair Overeem, but he'll do it in the main event of UFC 203 in Cleveland, Ohio. The news was announced by the promotion on Wednesday.
Miocic seized heavyweight gold from Fabricio Werdum earlier this month at UFC 198 by knocking out the Brazilian in the first round on their main event contest. The Cleveland native is currently on a three-fight wining streak that includes victories over Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski and Werdum. Miocic's last loss came to Junior dos Santos via decision back in December 2014 at UFC on Fox 13.
Meanwhile, Overeem is coming off an impressive technical knockout victory over Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 87 earlier this month, and currently finds himself in a four-fight wining streak. He's also ranked number three in the UFC heavyweight rankings.
UFC 203 takes place on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Quicken Loans Arena. This card marks the UFC's first visit to Cleveland, and its first event in Ohio since UFC Fight Night 40, which was held in Cincinnati in May 2014.
