Welcome to episode 122 of the Promotional Malpractice Live Chat.
What a weird time it is in the sport, right? On the one hand, the UFC is putting their best foot forward with their best content available. They gave us a huge grudge match in Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier, a showcase of rising sensation Conor McGregor, high-end title eliminator in Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Johnson and a semi-superfight with Nick Diaz vs. Anderson Silva later on. There's nothing about that that's bad.
Yet, the market for nostalgia is apparently hot. If there's a fighter (and really, even just a person) who has little to know ability, but even the slightest measure of name value, there are two MMA companies with decent dollar amounts willing to bid for your services.
Mirko Cro Cop has returned to the UFC, but likely only because UFC bid as a means to keep the Croatian off of Spike TV. It's not clear whether UFC bid for the services of Kimbo Slice, but Bellator did and now he's back. We have bad MMA to look forward to later in the year on an elevated platforms, but there apparently is a much bigger market for that than I give credit.
Still, all is not lost. Elite MMA continues this weekend with UFC on FOX 14 and there's something about Conor McGregor (and the UFC) that's worth discussing.
