Last weekend was a big weekend for MMA fans. We had Ronda Rousey's 16 second win over Alexis Davis, Chris Weidman getting hurt but pulled off the victory over Lyoto Machida, Frankie Edgar retiring B.J. Penn, Urijah Faber beating Alex Caceres. One thing that seemed to be neglected is WSOF for the first time having a fight card on NBC.
WSOF 11 had a decent card having guys like Melvin Guillard, Jon Fitch, and a main event featuring Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell. If the injury big didn't hit WSOF, they could have had another big name in Jake Shields.
According to Dave Meltzer, WSOF did pretty well for themselves getting 906,000 viewers in the 4pm time slot on Saturday. They seemed to do pretty well but because WSOF is the 3rd biggest MMA promotion, all of their attention got eaten up by the MMA powerhouse known as the UFC.
The UFC held their international fight week or red, white, and fight week. All of the big time MMA journalist were in Vegas covering the UFC events on Saturday and on Sunday. Unfortunately, WSOF or the people over in NBC should have been aware that they were trying to compete with the UFC and just like many of the other organizations that tried to compete against the UFC, they lost.
A loss having 906,000 views is a pretty big win for WSOF.
